Pazhankovil

This middle temple among the seven on the southern banks of Chayyar was built by Madhurantaka Chola in the late tenth century. The intricate carvings on the main Gopura are typical of Chola architecture of this period.  The presiding deities here are Balakritheswarar and Balambika. It appeared that the fruit – Pazham in Tamil - from  the  Amrita Ksalasa in the hands of Mahavishnu fell into the Cheyyar river and reached its banks here; the place owes its name to this legend.

There is a tradition here that the devotees offer fruits to the deity as Neivedyam for favours or for redemption of their vows. A special feature of this temple is that it has a Sannidhi for Lord Murugan which is very popular among the devotees; all festivals for this deity are also celebrated with fervour by the devotees.
